One of my holiday traditions is to watch the Christmas program from First Baptist Church of Paducah, KY on Christmas Eve which comes on immediately after the 10 o’clock evening news. We’ve been “back home” for every Christmas ever since we’ve moved down to AL so I’ve been able to continue the habit.
Not long after I moved here to Grace Life, my pastor’s wife, Pam, who also serves as my Music Assistant, gave me a CD of Huw Priday. I have reveled in listening to it ever since. I love listening to tenors and classical tenors all the more. Huw is a tenor par-excellance! If you don’t like classical music, Huw is not for you. If you do, however, like Pavarotti, Domingo, et.al, you need to get some of his music.
Back to Christmas Eve….I was just tuning in to watch again and much to my surprise (what to my wondering eyes appear?) I spy Huw Priday singing at FBC Paducah! I was thrilled to hear such singing and done in such a selfless, humble way. Some may hear this style of singing as exhibitionism or carrying on as a “show off”. Maybe I have a blind spot, but I didn’t receive Huw that way at all, nor do I perceive it in his recordings. Is that an absolute judgment on Priday’s heart? Of course not! “For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?” (1 Cor. 2:11)
Only the Lord knows the motives and intents of Priday’s heart. I don’t believe that you can say a particular style of music conveys arrogance and pride, either. But that’s an entirely different discussion….
Do yourself a favor and go get a copy of Priday’s CD!
